Burnout Is More Than Being Tired After Work

Being tired after a long day is normal.

Being tired after a long day is normal.

Burnout is different.

It can feel like the battery no longer recharges properly.

You rest and still feel depleted.

Tasks that once felt manageable begin to feel irritating or pointless.

You may become emotionally detached from work, more cynical, less patient or unable to concentrate the way you used to.

What may be happening

Burnout is commonly associated with prolonged work-related stress that has not been successfully managed.

It is not simply a bad Monday.

It usually develops over time.

Workload, lack of control, unclear expectations, poor support, conflict and chronic imbalance can all contribute.

Something you can try today

Do not solve burnout by adding another productivity system.

Start by identifying the pressure.

Is it volume?

Hours?

Lack of support?

Constant availability?

No recovery time?

Then choose one boundary or conversation that addresses the actual source rather than only trying to become better at enduring it.

When you may need more support

If exhaustion, detachment or difficulty functioning is significant or persistent, speak with an appropriate healthcare or mental-health professional.

Other conditions can also cause severe fatigue or concentration difficulties, so avoid assuming everything is burnout.
