Five Things to Do When Your Brain Has Too Many Tabs Open

You need to send the email.

You need to send the email.

Buy the thing.

Remember the appointment.

Call somebody back.

Think about the problem.

Make a decision.

Do the laundry.

Figure out dinner.

And somehow your brain decides the best response is to stand in the middle of the room and do absolutely none of it.

Too many mental tabs can make even simple tasks feel noisy.

What may be happening

When your attention is carrying too many unfinished tasks, decisions and reminders at once, it becomes harder to decide what deserves attention first.

The goal is not to become perfectly organised.

It is to reduce the amount your brain is being asked to hold at one time.

Something you can try today

Try these five things:

1. Write everything down.
Do not organise it yet. Just get it out of your head.
2. Circle what actually needs attention today.
Not eventually. Today.
3. Choose one thing that takes less than five minutes.
Finish it if you can.
4. Choose one larger task and define only the first step.
Not “sort finances.” Open the banking app.
5. Move everything else to later on purpose.
Postponing something deliberately feels different from forgetting it.

You do not need every tab closed.

You just need enough quiet to see the next one.

When you may need more support

If concentration, memory, overwhelm or decision-making difficulties are persistent, worsening or interfering significantly with daily life, consider discussing them with an appropriate healthcare or mental-health professional.
