For some people, faith is a source of enormous comfort.
Prayer can steady you.
Scripture can give language to suffering.
Church community can help carry difficult seasons.
And sometimes you can pray sincerely and still need counselling, medical care, medication, rest, practical support or another form of help.
Those things do not have to compete.
What this can feel like
You may wonder whether needing professional help means your faith is weak.
Someone may even have told you to “just pray more.”
That can add shame to something that is already difficult.
What may be happening
Mental and emotional distress can involve many factors, including biological, psychological, social and situational ones.
Spiritual practices can be part of support without being the only form of support.
Faith and treatment can coexist.
Something you can try today
If faith matters to you, let it be one part of your support system rather than a test you have to pass.
Pray.
Talk with someone trustworthy.
Book the appointment.
Take the medication you have been appropriately prescribed.
Rest.
Ask for practical help.
Receiving care does not cancel belief.
When you may need more support
If low mood, anxiety, trauma, grief or other difficulties are significantly affecting your life, consider professional support in addition to the spiritual support you value.
