A little help right now

I Feel Alone

You don't need to convince yourself that you aren't lonely.

Loneliness can become very loud.

Especially at night.

Especially when everybody else seems occupied with their own lives.

Especially when what you really want isn't people in general.

You want your person.

Or somebody who understands.

Or somebody who notices without needing a ten-paragraph explanation first.

I'm not going to tell you that you aren't alone.

If you feel lonely, then loneliness is what is here right now.

But we can try not to let it have the entire room.

Is there one person you could contact?

Not necessarily your closest person.

Just someone safe enough.

You don't need to write:

“Hello, I am currently experiencing significant emotional distress.”

You can write:

“Hey. You awake?”

Or:

“Rough evening. Talk to me about something random?”

Or:

“I don't really need advice. Could use some company.”

You are allowed to make a small request.

If nobody is available right now\...

Don't turn silence into evidence.

Someone not answering at this moment does not tell you what you mean to them.

People sleep.

People work.

Phones die.

People have their own difficult nights.

For now, put another human voice in the room if that helps.

A familiar podcast.

A programme you've watched before.

Music that feels like company rather than noise.

Sit somewhere other than the place where you've been spiralling, if you can.

Open the door.

Turn on a light.

Change the room a little.

And if what you need is to be known...

Write this somewhere:

“What I wish somebody understood right now is…”

Finish the sentence.

You don't have to make it pretty.

You don't have to send it.

Just don't make yourself pretend that you don't need anybody because needing people feels vulnerable.

Human beings need human beings.

Tonight, you may simply be feeling that truth more sharply than usual.

Small next step:

Send one safe person a simple message:

“Could use a little company. You around?”
