When Everything Feels Like Too Much Effort

There are days when depression does not feel dramatic. It feels inconvenient.

There are days when depression does not feel dramatic. It feels inconvenient.

The shower is right there, but getting into it feels like work. There is food in the kitchen, but making something to eat requires more energy than you seem to have. Somebody sends a message you genuinely want to answer, and three days later it is still sitting there.

Even things you normally enjoy can begin to feel like assignments.

That can be difficult to explain, especially when somebody looking from the outside says, “But it only takes five minutes.”

The problem is not always the five minutes. Sometimes it is everything your brain has to do to get you to those five minutes.

What may be happening

Depression can affect energy, concentration, motivation, sleep, appetite and the ability to experience pleasure.

That means an ordinary task may require more effort than it normally would.

Then shame can make things heavier.

The dishes pile up. You feel bad about the dishes. Feeling bad makes it harder to start. The pile grows. Now the task feels even bigger.

The same thing can happen with messages, laundry, meals, schoolwork, appointments and personal care.

Something you can try today

Make the task smaller.

Not “clean the kitchen.”

Wash one cup.

Not “get myself together.”

Sit up. Put your feet on the floor.

Not “make a proper meal.”

Find something that requires almost no preparation and gives your body some fuel.

The smaller version still counts.

You are not trying to win the day. You are trying to make the next part of it slightly more manageable.

When you may need more support

If this is happening frequently, getting worse, or interfering with eating, sleeping, hygiene, work, school, relationships or basic self-care, tell someone you trust and consider seeking professional support.

You do not have to wait until things become unbearable before asking for help.
